Sustainability Data Lead, Global
Role Overview & Requirements
Position summary
Vantage is seeking a Global Sustainability Data Lead to own the design, governance, and continuous evolution of the company's sustainability data ecosystem. This role combines deep expertise in environmental metrics, including carbon and water accounting methodologies, with the technical data skills to translate that expertise into scalable, auditable, and repeatable systems, moving the company from ad hoc data collection toward a model where sustainability data is well-defined, reliably sourced, and reusable across disclosure cycles, and also developing customized sustainability data solutions for customers and investors.
Why this role matters
This role builds the data backbone that lets Vantage meet rising sustainability reporting expectations consistently and defensibly. By establishing a single source of truth for metrics and methodologies, automating data pipelines, and embedding audit-ready lineage, the Lead ensures the company's carbon, energy, and water reporting stands up to assurance while serving internal, regulatory, customer, and investor needs.
Key responsibilities
- Data architecture: Design and own the sustainability data ecosystem (how metrics are defined, sourced, calculated, validated, stored, and reused) and maintain a single source of truth for metrics and methodologies, with depth in GHG Protocol Scope 1-3, market- vs. location-based Scope 2, 24/7 carbon-free energy accounting, WUE, PUE, and water accounting frameworks.
- Systems and pipelines: Own sustainability data and reporting platforms end-to-end, design and maintain automated pipelines using SQL and Python in a Microsoft-based enterprise data environment, and develop curated datasets and semantic models feeding Power BI dashboards, reporting, disclosures, and customer/investor requests, with data lineage and audit trails embedded.
- Customer and investor solutions: Develop and deliver customized sustainability data packages and reporting solutions for customers and investors, serving as the data point of contact for their requests.
- Reporting execution: Lead data collection, preparation, validation, and QA for the annual Sustainability Report, own intake and fulfillment of reporting requests, maintain a reporting calendar, and serve as primary technical contact for third-party assurance and internal audit.
- Program enablement: Act as the sustainability data authority for program owners and regional leads, train team members and data owners, and monitor the regulatory landscape (CSRD/ESRS, ISSB, SEC climate rules, California SB 253 and 261) for implications.
Team and stakeholders
As a member of the Global Sustainability Center of Excellence, the role works with sustainability program owners and regional leads and partners with IT, Investor Relations, Capital Markets, Corporate Development, Customer Experience, and Operations, plus third-party assurance providers and internal audit.
Key details
- Base: Denver, Colorado.
- Compensation: $125,000 to $135,000 (may fall outside the range depending on qualifications).
- Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D, short and long-term disability, paid time off, employee assistance, and 401(k) with company match.
Requirements:
- 7 to 10 years in sustainability reporting, sustainability analytics, environmental data management, or a combination of sustainability and data governance roles.
- Demonstrated experience designing or transforming structured sustainability/environmental data collection and reporting in complex, multi-site organizations, moving from ad hoc to system-driven.
- Depth in at least two of: GHG Protocol, CSRD/ESRS, ISSB, SEC climate rules, SASB, TCFD, GRI, plus experience preparing data for third-party assurance or verification.
- Required sustainability expertise: GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (Scope 1-3), Scope 2 market- vs. location-based accounting and instruments (RECs, GOs, PPAs, VPPAs), 24/7 CFE accounting, water accounting/WUE and water risk frameworks (WRI Aqueduct, AWS), and PUE.
- Required technical skills: SQL, Python, Power BI (or comparable), at least one enterprise sustainability reporting platform (e.g. Workiva, Watershed, Persefoni, Sphera) beyond data entry, ETL/pipeline design, and strong data quality management.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, data science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, accounting, or related; master's or certifications (GHG accounting, SASB FSA, CDMP) preferred.
